Small dark skimmer with a white face and light markings on its rear, the markings can be yellow to red. The ♂ is red marked on the upper body with yellow to red markings in the centre. When older they become red-brown. The ♀ appears lighter coloured as it is yellow marked (not red), young ♂ still look like ♀.

Prefers small pools, but can be seen further from the water.
