A small orange-brown goose. The front of the wing is white and the rear edge is black. A lighter orange-yellow head and a black tail. The ♂ in breeding plumage has a dark collar and the beak is black. The ♀ head is lighter in colour.

Breeds in burrows that can be in the ground, in trees or between buildings.

Found in East Europe, Spain, Asia and Africa. Often kept as ornamental birds and escaped Ruddy shelducks can be seen in western Europe as well.

LA:
≈ The TADORNA TADORNA (Shelduck) is the same size but shows whiter with a black head. 
≈ The ALOPOCHEN AEGYPTIACA (Egyptian goose) is more colourful with a browner back and a lighter coloured head.
