Dark oval flat shield with yellow markings and stripes, the belly shield is even coloured. The head and legs are darker coloured with yellow markings and the feet are webbed. The young have rounder shields with extended head and legs. The belly shield of the ♂ becomes hollow in time to make mounting easier, for a better balance while mating. Mostly in small groups and are happy in and out of the water, very fearful though. Depending on the climate they will hibernate during winter. ⇔ l. 12-38 cm syn. European pond terrapin, European pond turtle
