A small dark butterfly, the upper surface of the wings are black-brown with a very narrow light coloured edge. The under surface is lighter and with yellow edged eyes. 3 on the front wing and 5 on the rear wing. The eyes of the ♂ are sometimes visible on the upper surface and she can have a yellow tinge on the under surface. Prefers partly shaded areas like open forests, often seen in groups. Mostly sitting with closed wings, but in the morning chill with wings open to warm. ⇔ wsp. 35-42 mm LA: ≈ The EREBIA AETHIOPS (Scotch argus) has orange markings on all wings. ≈ The MANIOLA JURTINA (Meadow brown) has no eyes on the rear wings.
