Thick hairy bee with a bold black head, orange-brown breast, black grey striped rear body with a brown to yellow-red tip. There is a lighter and darker variety, on which the darker stripes on the rear body seem completely black. Nests in colonies of approx. 200 individuals in burrows, below the surface or in abandoned birds’ nests or sheds. Adults and larvae feed on honey and pollen. ⇔ l. 15-20 mm syn. Common carder bee LA: ≈ The BOMBUS TERRESTRIS (Buff-tailed bumblebee) has a white tail. ≈ The BOMBUS HORTORUM (Garden bumblebee) has a striped breast. ≈ And the BOMBUS LAPIDARIUS (Red-tailed bumblebee) a black breast and coloured rear. ≈ The BOMBUS CAMPESTRIS (Cuckoo bumblebee) lays its eggs in colonies of the Carder bee.
