Small slender beetle with a gray-black hairy back shield and red neck shield with black markings. Black legs and black probes that are red at the base. The body is orange-red. The head is black with a red mouth. The marking on the neck shield reaches up to the front edge and sometimes continues to the rear, but this is not always the case. It often flies close above grass or plants while hunting for insects such as aphids, flies and caterpillars. ⇔ l. 11-15 mm LA: ≈ The CANTHARIS RUSTICA (Black soldier) is very similar, but the black spot on the neck shield does not touch the front edge and is often heart-shaped. The legs have red thighs. See photo LA.
