Dark beetle with shield markings like a necklace, colour from bronze, copper red to green or black. The vertical indentations on the shield are distinctive. Prefers moist soil, eats rotting fruit, worms and other beetles (amongst others the Colorado potato beetle). ⇔ l. 17-23 mm Ground beetles often have no wings. Sometimes fleshy hind wings can be observed enabling flight, though not all individuals have these. LA: ≈ The CARABUS CANCELLATUS has red thighs and the start of the antennae are red as well.
