Large black beetle with distinctive bubbly rows on its shield. Often a violet, green or bronze glow. Legs and antennae are black. Mostly night active, eats slugs, worms and larvae that are cut into edible portions. Sometimes fruit is eaten as well. ⇔ l. 25-30 mm It is a large family with lots of variation in colour and markings. Well adapted to living in gardens, parks and cultivated areas, it walks fast. Sometimes the shield is fused so flight is no longer possible.
