At first looks black and white. However, the back is dark green with a purple copper glow. ♂ in summer black chin and throat, in winter the feathers develop yellow edges, the cheeks become brownish. 
The crest is striking. In flight, the broad wings are clearly visible. 

Prefers grassy patches. Aerobatic flight during mating season by ♂.

When threatened the bird simulates a broken wing to draw attention away from the nest. 
Migratory bird.
