Light brown grasshopper with darker crossbands over back and legs. Short thick rear legs, neck shield with a small vertical dent. The rear wing is bright blue with dark edges, only visible when jumping. This grasshopper cannot fly but can ‘float’ for several meters. Prefers sandy areas eating mostly plants. Chirping is soft and often missed. The ♀ is clearly larger than the ♂. ⇔ l. 13-23 mm LA: ≈ The OEDIPODA GERMANICA (Red-winged grasshopper) is similar and only when jumping can the wing colour be seen.
