Large dark dragonfly with yellow markings and green eyes. On the dark rear eyes are paired yellow markings alternating narrow and wide. The thorax has a distinctive yellow marking. The rear of the ♂ is wider and club-shaped, the ♀ has an extending ovipositor (to lay eggs). Stays near water and only flies to hunt, often hanging on a branch above the water. ⇔ l. 65-80 mm LA: ≈ The AESHNA CYANEA (Southern hawker) has blue or brown eyes and purple markings at the rear. ≈ The BRACHYTRON PRATENSE (Hairy dragonfly) has a brown body with blue eyes.
