Thin brown somewhat translucent mosquito with long legs, thin wings and a long snout. The ♂ has hairy antennae. The ♀ buzz to attract the ♂, the ♂ uses its antennae to find the ♀. The ♂ feeds on plant sap while the ♀ feeds on the blood of mammals and birds. Larvae live in water feeding on protozoa. The ♀ needs blood to produce eggs and senses sweat and CO2. There is no sting but a bite. ⇔ l. 5-6 mm syn. Common house mosquito LA: ≈ The CHIRONOMUS PLUMOSUS (Buzzer midge) has tinted wings and the body is longer than the wings, ♂ have thickly feathered antennae.
