Hoverfly with yellow-orange black markings, large translucent wings and large brown-red eyes. The breast is copper coloured with grey stripes. The pattern on its back is distinctive but variable in colour, the ♀ often has a thin band of white between the black markings while for the ♂ this is often yellow. Larvae feed on aphids while adults feed on pollen. ⇔ l. 7-11 mm
