Large Ant with orange-red breast and black brown head, rear body and legs. The ♂ is completely black. Digs nests partly below and on the surface, when disturbed they are aggressive and bites and excretes acid. Feeds on insects and honeydew of aphids. A colony exists mainly of ♀, only in the mating season there are ♂ which die after mating. ⇔ l. 6-11 mm syn. Southern wood ant, Horse ant LA: ≈ The FORMICA POLYCTENA (European red wood ant) is very similar and mixes with this one. No photo available.
