Black armoured millipede. The shiny round backplates have a small white edge and each segment has 2 barely visible legs. Young still have red yellow markings on the back. When disturbed it curls into a little ball so all soft areas are protected and it excretes some toxin. Found in deciduous woodland and in gardens, particularly with wood chips, feeds on plants and is night active. ⇔ l. 7-20 mm Lives for a long time, 3 years as a nymph and 3 to 10 years as an adult.
