Large round yellow-brown coloured cricket-like bug with a large neck shield, and sturdy front legs. The front legs are like those of a mole, the rear legs are long but not as long as other crickets. The wings are with a skin like texture and folded on to the back, the rear has 2 cerci (little extensions). Lives below the surface in self-dug tunnels and is able to walk back which is convenient after a tunnel collapse. Feeds on larvae and worms but also eats roots and seeds. Is able to fly and swim as well. It prefers loose soil in warmer climates or wetlands. ⇔ l. 35-50 mm syn. European mole cricket (gryllus=cricket, talpa=mole) Though they are not crickets they belong to the same order as crickets and grasshoppers namely the ORTHOPTERA.
