Black oval water beetle. The shield is shiny blue-black with rows of dents. The legs are red yellow and the front legs are used to catch prey while the others are paddle-shaped. The eyes are able to simultaneously look on and below the water surface. They glide with considerable speed on the water surface often in groups. When threatened they can dive, excrete a smelly substance or fly. Eats insects fallen into the water. ⇔ l. 5-7 mm LA: ≈ Very similar to the GYRINUS SUBSTRIATES, another whirligig beetle.
