Upper wing surfaces are black with white curved markings. Orange markings on rear wing signify the summer generation, the first generation is orange-red with black stains on the top surface, the tips of the front wings show white markings and the rear edge is blue marked. Underside has brown-red black yellow patches (both generations). ⇔ wsp. spring 28-32 mm, summer 35-40 mm The first generation pupates in autumn, winters as a larva to hatch in spring and lays its eggs that will become the summer generation. The underside resembles a geographical map, hence the name. LA: ≈ The ♀ LIMENITIS POPULI (Poplar admiral) has a blue rear edge below the white band, the under surface is orange with white markings.
