Grey hairless fly with strikingly colourful eyes. The head is wider than the body and multi-coloured eyes have a zigzag pattern. The wings are grey marked and partly transparent, held slightly upwards while sitting. An able and silent flyer, the ♂ feeds on nectar, but the ♀ feeds on the blood of humans and animals. Mostly found near water, active when it is rainy. ⇔ l. 8-12 mm syn. Notch-horned cleg fly A bite of this Horse fly is painful and often results in a large blister-like swelling.
