A small black damselfly with a bright blue marking on the second last segment of the rear. The thorax has a black top and coloured sides with striped markings. The marking on the wing edge is black on the upper surface and lighter on the under surface. 

The ♂ always has a blue-black upper surface, for the ♀ this is variable. There are five types of ♀ with a thorax colour of green, blue, purple, orange or brown. Sometimes colours blend as it ages. The blue of the tail can be brown and less prominent.
