Black brown ant with thin hairs. Lives in colonies mostly found below rocks or tree stumps. They create fixed pathways to and from the nest.

They feed on insects and honeydew of aphids which they protect against predators such as ladybirds.

Once a year there is a "wedding" flight, ♂ + ♀ fly as high as possible. Only the ♂ that flies the highest are allowed to mate, after which they die. Fertilised ♀ drop their wings and found new colonies.
