A shiny damselfly, the back and the rear have a copper green to bronze metal shine. The ♂ has on both rear sides a blue tint and the eyes can be blue. The ♀ is often green copper coloured. The wing markings are dark. 

Can be found by still or flowing streams with dense vegetation.

Spreadwings are characterised by their metallic lines and the wing position, when resting they are slanting backwards.

≈ The LESTES VIRIDIS (Willow emerald damselfly) is longer with metal green upper surface and light coloured wing markings.
≈ The LESTES BARBARUS (Shy emerald damselfly) has two-tone wing spots.
