Metallic shiny green fly with brown-red eyes, long black back hairs and translucent wings. With age, the colour becomes more gold-copper like. Adults feed on pollen and nectar, eggs are laid in droppings or carrion. ⇔ l. 10-14 mm syn. Common green bottle fly, Family: Carrion flies, Bluebottles, Greenbottles, Cluster Flies Used in forensic science to determine the time of death, as is the Urban bluebottle blowfly and Fly of the dead. LA: ≈ The PHAENICIA SERICATA or LUCILIA SERICATA is similar and can only be distinguished under the microscope. But it lays its eggs in wounds of live animals and is less common.
