Long brown fly with a pointed rear end and broad breast, the rear extends beyond the wings. Below its chin are long hairs like a beard. The strong legs are black with some red. Space between the brown eyes. Often found at forest edges and open areas. Looking for prey from bushes and trees, it has no jaws so it sucks its prey empty. ⇔ l. 14-18 mm syn. Assassin flies LA: ≈ The DYSMACHUS TRIGONUS (Fan-bristled robber fly) has more hair and completely black legs. ≈ The NEOITAMUS CYANURUS (Common Awl Robberfly) has partially yellow legs. See photo LA.
