Large brown beetle with orange-brown fan-shaped antennae. The shield is hairy and brown and the head/neck is grey-black and hairy. Sideways on, some white triangle shaped markings and in combination with a pointed rear, are specific to the species. Swarms in twilight in woodland and on fields looking for partners. They feed on leaves and an oak tree foliage can be devoured completely by a swarm. Eggs are laid up to 30 cm deep, larvae develop in 3 to 4 years and feed on plant roots. ⇔ l. 20-30 mm syn. May bug, Mitchamador, Billy witch, Spang beetle LA: ≈ The AMPHIMALLON SOLSTITIALE (Summer chafer) is much smaller with more hair and has a round rear section with a brown neck shield.
