Black fly with red-brown eyes. On the dark breast, there are lighter vertical stripes, a yellow-brown rear section with a wide dark band. Dark legs with lighter feet, translucent brown wings and long hairs on body and legs. Able flyer and omnivorous. The larvae feed on droppings and waste. Often seen indoors especially in colder climates. ⇔ l. 6-8 mm This fly lives everywhere except the deserts and poles. Extensively used in laboratories and therefore well studied.
