Large dragonfly with a pointed rear end, black legs, bright wings with some black markings. The ♂ has a brown hairy breast and blue-black tipped rear, young ♂ still have yellow markings at the side of the rear. The ♀ is yellow with black vertical stripes on the rear, becoming more brownish with age, with a blue shine on the stripes. The markings are distinctive. Likes to sunbathe on rocks or footpaths along still or slow-flowing water with vegetation-free banks. ⇔ l. 30-35 mm LA: ≈ The ♂ LIBELLULA DEPRESSA (Broad-bodied Chaser) has a wider rear with less black and a coloured wing base. ≈ The LIBELLULA FULVA (Scarce chaser) has yellow wing veins and black wing tips.
