Large damselfly with red eyes and red rear end with black markings. The breast is black to dark-copper with yellow or red shoulder bands. The ♂ has a red rear with dark bands at the tail end, the ♀ has variable markings. Often seen by still ponds with lots of vegetation. Eggs are laid on water plants and fertilized by the male in tandem (where male and female form a circle) and sometimes the ♀ is submerged in the process. ⇔ l. 33-36 mm
