A big grey-black fly with square markings on its rear and a striped body. The large eyes are red-brown, the complete body is hairy and the feet are relatively large. Adult ♂ feeds on flower nectar while ♀ sucks on droppings or carrion. The larvae live in carrion, open wounds of mammals or in earthworms. ⇔ l. 13-15 mm
