A darter with brown-green eyes and a black "moustache", black yellow striped legs and a brown breast with lighter shoulder stripes. The ♂ has a red rear end, a bit club-shaped, the ♀ is yellow brownish with some black lines on its rear.
The "moustache" is a thin black line over its nose and along the eyes and is distinctive for this species.

The genus SYMPETRUM  (Darters) are very similar and certain characteristics can be found in several species but the combination is specific. 
≈ The SYMPETRUM SANGUINEUM (Ruddy darter) has completely black legs.
≈ And the SYMPETRUM STRIOLATUM (Common Darter) has a straight-sided rear end and the "moustache" does not extend alongside the eyes.
≈ The SYMPETRUM MERIDIONALE (Southern Darter) looks paler without black spots.
