Sturdy black brown horse-fly with large green eyes covering the complete head. The rear is brown with lighter markings and the breast is grey with faint lines. The brown wings are often held like a ridge tent when resting. 

Flies with some audible noise.  The ♀ has a pinch rostrum (nose) and feeds on the blood of grazing animals, the ♂ sucks plant sap.
The larvae feed on rotting plants as well as small bugs.

⇔ l. 20-25 mm

The green colour of the eyes disappears after death as is the case for most TABANIDAE (Horse-flies).
