Large brown fly with very long legs. A long body with darker striped back and an ochre yellow belly and tip. No markings on the wings which are kept to the sides.
The wings of the ♀ are longer than the body, the body end is actually an ovipositor to lay eggs. The body end of ♂ is a club-shaped.

Active early in spring but only at dusk and dawn in calm weather. The larvae feed on plant roots, rotting plants and the flies drink nectar.
