Colourful bird with characteristic white eyebrow and dark stripe over the eye, blue wings, brown back and a purple-red belly. Both genders are the same. Mostly seen alone or as a couple on a top of a tree/pole on the outlook for small prey on the surface. Nests are made in existing tree holes. During courting the ♂ gains altitude to simultaneously dive, turn and twitter to impress the female. ⇔ l. 35-38 cm National bird of Kenya and Botswana.
