Small black yellow wasp with an hourglass shape, the rear is tipped at both ends with yellow bands, the legs are yellow as well. The ♂ has a yellow nose and is smaller than the ♀. It catches caterpillars as food for the larvae, this food is stored in with the eggs in a hole or crack in an old wall, or hollow reeds. ⇔ l. 8-13 mm The markings are distinctive to the species but with some variation for subspecies that are not readily visible.
