Top surface yellow with a grey-brown edge and front wing tips. Under surface yellow with narrow brown pink edges along the wings, brown markings and a black spot below the front wing. The figure 8 on the rear under surface, the lower circle clearly larger, is a striking feature. Mostly found with closed wings, the brown edge is partially visible in this posture. The wings sometimes look more greenish than yellow. ⇔ wsp. 35-45 mm LA: ≈ The COLIAS ALFACARIENSIS (Berger's Clouded Yellow) is difficult to distinguish visually. The caterpillar has more yellow stripes and dots. No picture available. ≈ COLIAS PHICOMONE (Mountain Clouded Yellow) ≈ Also very similar is COLIAS CROCEUS (Dark clouded yellow) which is a little darker in colour and has a wider brown band. The caterpillar is similar.
