A skimmer with brown eyes and a brown breast with some yellow side markings. The ♂ has a straight red rear section and the ♀ a yellow-brown rear section. Both have some black lines at the tail end. The legs are black yellow striped and there is a small black line between the eyes which is distinctive. Flies from summer to late in autumn. ⇔ l. 35-40 mm LA: The genus SYMPETRUM (Darters) has similar size and colour. ≈ The SYMPETRUM SANGUINEUM (Ruddy darter) has black legs. ≈ The black line between the eyes of the SYMPETRUM VULGATUM (Vagrant darter) has a "moustache" shape and the ♂ has a club-shaped rear. ≈ The SYMPETRUM MERIDIONALE (Southern Darter) looks paler without black spots.
