Shiny slug without a shell with a wrinkled rear body, the front is smooth with a small breathing hole. Mostly pitch black, but other colours are possible like dark red, orange and grey. The young are brown. The underside of this slug is very muscular and this makes the movement clearly visible. ⇔ l. 100-150 mm syn. Black arion, European black slug, Large black slug LA: ≈ The ARION RUFUS (Red slug) has a red under surface but can only be properly differentiated based on its genitalia and there is already a 50-year debate whether it should be one or two separate species.
