A large hawker with a brown breast with two wide yellow-green sidelines and small shoulder lines. At the top of the rear section, a distinctive yellow triangle. The ♂ has blue-brown eyes and a dark brown to black rear with blue yellow markings. The ♀ has yellow-brown eyes with a brown rear and green-yellow markings. Hunts for insects in the vicinity of mammals and it sometimes appears as if it bites the mammals. ⇔ l. 55-63 mm This is the smallest of this family, the ♂ is very territorial but also in small groups in autumn. LA: ≈ The ♀ of the AESHNA CYANEA (Southern hawker) has more green and the ♂ has large green markings at the tail end.
