A slender eagle with a small dark head, the back is dark brown with a lighter central marking. Belly lighter in colour with some thin dark lines. Dark brown fairly long tail, large yellow feet and talons and a yellow-grey beak. Resident and monogamous bird, the education of young take an extended period after which they wander off to find their own partners. Prey is spotted and caught in flight, being both birds and mammals. ⇔ l. 55-65 cm syn. HIERAAETUS FASCIATUS A resident bird, rare. Its habitat is scattered along coastlines and in small patches across southern Europe, North Africa and south Asia. LA: ≈ The PANDION HALIAETUS (Fishhawk) has a white head and looks more sturdy.
