Small dark owl with a large square head, the ear tufts continue between the eyes and can be lowered giving it a different face. Grey-brown marked body and wings with sometimes a little brown. The long narrow wings have a banded underside while the upper surface is light ginger in colour. On its back is a white band from the shoulder to the tail. Can be heard easily with a short squeaking (poop-poop) sound but is hard to spot. In daytime resting close to a tree stem. Hunts at night on insects and small birds or mammals. It appears larger in flight due to the wide wingspan. ⇔ l. 19-20 cm Nests in South Europe and Asia and winters in Africa. LA: ≈ The GLAUCIDIUM PASSERINUM (Pygmy owl) is smaller lacking the ear tufts and has a somewhat flattened head.
