The front wing is grey with a pale light purple-brown shine and a notable yellow grey pretzel shaped eight on the wing. Rear wing greyish white marked. A stout, hairy head. Antennae of ♂ are strongly feathered. The body of ♀very hairy. Caterpillar is easily recognised: white with bright yellow stripes and black dots, lightly haired. ⇔ wsp. 30-40 mm
