A slim bird with black back and white under surface, only the wing tips and the rear edge of the under surface is black. A flat grey beak. In daytime seen at sea soaring with stretched wings low over the water occasionally flapping the wings to gain speed. It dives for fish and rests at sea by day, at night resting on shore in large colonies. ⇔ l. 32-35 cm Migratory bird in the summer along shores and in the winter on the oceans. This is the most common shearwater, the other species are very similar.
