Small wader like with a white breast and belly, rust brown back and shoulders, long legs and neck. The ♂ has a grey head and while courting a black and white collar. The ♀ has a brown head and neck and her back appears darker with more markings. The wings are largely white with some black markings on top and black fingers. Prefers open fields where insects, small animals, grasses and berries are found while roaming the field. While courting the ♂ elevates its collar and flaps its wings to impress. At the breeding time, he guards the nest. As soon as the eggs are hatched the chicks abandon the nest. ⇔ l. 40-45 cm The disappearance of large, unused or fallow fields is threatening the habitat of the bustards. LA: ≈ The OTIS TARDA (Great bustard) lacks the black collar and is much larger.
