Flat grey-brown water bug with an oval shaped body, long tail and large grasping front legs immediately next to the head giving it the scorpion look. The rear body is red but mostly hidden below the wings. The tail is actually a snorkel to breathe below the surface of the water. Prey is caught using the large front legs. Does not swim very well, chooses slow streams with vegetation rich banks. Rarely flies, often only when a new location is needed. ⇔ l. 17-22 mm syn. NEPA RUBRA
