Small toad with a dark grey back with black markings and on its belly large red markings extending to the inside of the legs. In the daytime, it is in the water and at dawn, it is looking for flies and gnats. When threatened they try to dive away and if that fails it will suddenly show the bright red belly by pushing up and tumbling on its back. ⇔ l. 3-5 cm Often found near puddles and temporary water pools, where the larvae develop rapidly before predators arrive in the water. The downside is sometimes the water evaporates, and the larvae die. LA: ≈ The BOMBINA VARIEGATA (Yellow-bellied toad) has a yellow marked belly.
