Small round toad with a dark arrow-shaped marking on its back. The colour can be grey-brown to green with markings of red, black or white. The skin is soft and smooth though sometimes with little warts. The bulgy eyes have an orange iris and vertical pupil. No vocal sac. A digging lump at the underside of the legs and the ♀ is much larger than the ♂. Prefers sandy areas enabling it to make a small burrow as a hideout during the daytime. When threatened a skin fluid is excreted with a strong garlic scent. ⇔ l. 4-7 cm syn. Spadefoot toad Hibernates.
