Oval shaped dark brown water beetle, yellow edges along the neck and back shield, yellow legs that are well adapted to swimming. The ♂ has a smooth shield, ♀has a ribbed shield. The ♂ also has sucking feet used to control the ♀ while mating. Able swimmer and flyer, walking is awkward. Hunts for insects, larvae and small fish. ⇔ l. 27-35 mm Submerged, colours are hard to see making it difficult to distinguish some of the species.
