Brown beetle, the ♂ has a brown-black shield covering the wings. On its head two translucent markings. The ♀ is like a larva, legs but no shield and a soft flat rear. On the under surface is an organ that emits light in the dark. Prefers moist open areas and forest edges. Active in twilight and at night, the ♀ uses light to lure ♂. The ♂ can fly, the ♀ cannot. Both sexes, larvae and eggs are able to emit light. ⇔ l. 8-11 mm LA: ≈ The LAMPYRIS NOCTILUCA (Common glow-worm) is larger and prefers warmer areas in bushes.
