Long, flat red-brown body with armoured segments. Each segment has 1 pair of legs, the first pair is thicker with toxic glands to paralyse and kill prey. Starts with 7 pairs of legs and gains an extra pair when shedding its skin, to a maximum of 15 pairs. An agile runner hunting insects and other bugs. Very susceptible to dehydration and thus staying below rocks and other covers during the daytime. Can live for 6 years. ⇔ l. 20-35 mm syn. Stone centipede LA: ≈ The STIGMATOGASTER SUBTERRANEA (Ground Lover Centipede) is lighter in colour, longer and mostly found in soil.
