Brown black wings with orange-yellow markings on the top surface. Under surface orange with pearlescent markings and black stripes. ♂ smaller than ♀ with similar markings and colour. Prefers woodland with young maple, since the young caterpillar feeds on it. Despite the bright colours, it is difficult to spot, ♂ can be found at pools. ⇔ wsp. 35-42 mm Populations vary each year mainly due to parasites. LA: ≈ The similar EUPHYDRYAS INTERMEDIA found often in the Alps has a slightly larger ♂. They are mutually exclusive in an area. No photos avaiable.
